The Beginner's Guide to Sudoku: From Zero to Solving Puzzles

What Is Sudoku?
Sudoku is a logic puzzle played on a 9×9 grid. The grid is divided into nine 3×3 sub-grids called "boxes" or "blocks." At the start of a game, some cells come pre-filled with numbers (called "clues" or "givens"). Your goal is to fill every empty cell with a number from 1 to 9 such that each row, each column, and each 3×3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. There is always exactly one solution to a properly designed Sudoku puzzle — no guessing required.
The Three Golden Rules
The entire game of Sudoku boils down to three simple rules. Memorize these and you'll never make an illegal move:
- Each row must contain the numbers 1 through 9, with no repeats. A row goes horizontally across the grid — there are 9 rows.
- Each column must contain the numbers 1 through 9, with no repeats. A column goes vertically — there are 9 columns.
- Each 3×3 box must contain the numbers 1 through 9, with no repeats. The grid divides neatly into nine of these boxes.
That's it. If you check your work against these three rules after every move — and every number you place doesn't violate a row, column, or box — you're playing correctly. The challenge is finding the right numbers, not following the rules.
Understanding the Grid
Let's get comfortable with the landscape. A Sudoku grid has:
- 81 cells total (9 rows × 9 columns).
- Rows numbered 1 to 9 from top to bottom.
- Columns numbered 1 to 9 from left to right.
- 9 boxes, each 3×3, arranged in a 3-by-3 pattern across the grid.
Each cell belongs to exactly one row, one column, and one box. This triple membership is what creates the constraints that make Sudoku solving possible. When you place a number in a cell, you're satisfying that number's requirement for its row, its column, and its box simultaneously. This is why each placement has such a powerful ripple effect.
Your First Three Techniques
With the rules in mind, here are the three techniques that will let you solve your first puzzle. Start with the first one and work your way through. On Easy puzzles, these three techniques are often all you'll ever need.
1. Last Free Cell

2. Last Remaining Cell
Pick any empty cell. Look at its row — which numbers are already there? Look at its column — which numbers are there? Look at its 3×3 box — which numbers are there? 3. Last Possible Number
Pick a specific number — say, 5. Scan the entire grid and find every 5 already placed. Now pick a box that doesn't have a 5 yet. Which cells in that box could accept a 5, based on the rows and columns blocked by existing 5s? If only one cell in the box can accept a 5, place it there. Your First Puzzle: Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Let's solve part of an Easy puzzle together so you can see these techniques in action. Imagine the top row of your puzzle shows: 1, empty, 3, 4, empty, 6, 7, 8, empty. Using Last Free Cell: this row has 6 filled cells. The filled numbers are 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. The missing numbers are 2, 5, and 9. The row has three empty cells, so Last Free Cell doesn't work yet — we need more than one empty cell. Let's try Last Remaining Cell on the second cell (column 2). Look at column 2: it already contains 2, 5, 7, and 9. Look at the box containing that cell: it has 1, 3, 4, 6, and 8. Together, row/column/box rules out 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. The only number left is 9. Place a 9 there. One cell down — 80 to go.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Guessing. Never guess. A proper Sudoku puzzle has exactly one solution. Every placement should be logically justified. If you can't prove a number goes in a cell, leave it empty and try a different approach.
- Forgetting to check all three units. A number might work for the row and column but conflict with the box. Always verify against the row, column, and box before placing.
- Focusing on one area too long. If you're stuck on one part of the grid, move to a different area. Fresh eyes and a new perspective often spot what you missed.
- Rushing. Speed comes with practice. For your first puzzles, prioritize accuracy. Place numbers slowly and deliberately. Confirm each placement before moving on.
