Last Possible Number: Hunt for Missing Digits
The Last Possible Number technique flips the script. Instead of looking at empty cells and asking "what goes here?", you pick a specific digit and ask "where can this digit go?" within a row, column, or 3×3 box. When only one possible cell remains, you place the number. It's a scanning technique that trains your eye to see the board from each individual digit's perspective — a skill that sharpens your overall solving ability dramatically.
How Last Possible Number Works
Imagine you're playing a game of hide and seek with the number 5. You scan the entire Sudoku board and note every cell that already contains a 5. Those cells are impassable walls — no other 5 can appear in their row, column, or box. Now pick a 3×3 box that doesn't yet have a 5. Trace the rows and columns of every existing 5 on the board. Cross out every cell in your target box that lies on the same row or column as a placed 5. The cells that remain uncrossed are the only places a 5 could go in that box.
- Step 1: Choose a number to hunt for — start with numbers that appear frequently on the board, like digits you've seen 6 or 7 times.
- Step 2: Pick a unit (row, column, or box) that does not yet contain that number.
- Step 3: Using the placed instances of that number elsewhere, eliminate cells in the unit that are blocked by row, column, or box constraints.
- Step 4: If only one cell in the unit remains unblocked, place the number there.
A Concrete Example
Suppose you're hunting for the number 7. You find that 7 has already been placed in rows 1, 2, 4, 7, and 9, and in columns 1, 4, 5, 8, and 9. Now you focus on the top-middle 3×3 box (rows 1-3, columns 4-6). Cross out row 1 (already has a 7), row 2 (already has a 7), column 4 (already has a 7), column 5 (already has a 7), and column 6 — wait, column 6 doesn't have a 7 yet, so cells in that column remain open. But you've eliminated cells in rows 1 and 2, column 4 and column 5. The only remaining unblocked cell in the box might be R3C6. That's where 7 goes — you've found it using Last Possible Number.
This technique is particularly effective for numbers that appear frequently on the board. If you've already placed eight instances of the digit 3, the ninth placement is almost guaranteed to be solvable with a quick Last Possible Number scan. Look for rows, columns, or boxes that don't yet contain a 3 — the placement constraints from the eight existing 3s will typically leave only one possible cell in the remaining unit.
Relationship to Other Techniques
Last Possible Number is the third leg of the beginner technique triad. It complements Last Free Cell (unit-focused) and Last Remaining Cell (cell-focused) by adding the digit-focused perspective. A well-rounded beginner alternates between all three:
- Scan for Last Free Cells in nearly full units.
- Check individual cells for Last Remaining Cell opportunities.
- Hunt for digits using Last Possible Number when a specific number appears many times.
When to Use Last Possible Number
Use this technique when you feel stuck — when Last Free Cell and Last Remaining Cell aren't producing results. Switching to a digit-hunting mindset often reveals placements you overlooked. It's especially useful in the middle game of Medium puzzles, when the board is half-full and certain digits are well-established. In harder puzzles, Last Possible Number evolves into more advanced intersection-based techniques like Pointing Pairs, which extends the same logic to candidates rather than placed numbers.
A pro tip: after placing any new number, immediately run a Last Possible Number check for that same digit in the remaining units. Each placement constrains the digit further, often revealing the next placement in a satisfying chain.
